The paper presents a method for designing lathe spindles based on the static and dynamic analyses. Two types of criteria are used for the design. They are the minimum of the maximum workpiece deflection, and the minimum time required for the damped free oscillations to reach 66.666 percent of the initial displacement. The design parameters used in the study are the bearing spacing, the bearing stiffness, the workpiece diameter, and the location of an external damper. A dynamic matrix reduction technique has been used to economize on the computation time and computer memory storage.
